Position: Hostel Manager

New Zealand’s best-rated hostel group are on the hunt for a vibrant, engaging & focused individual to lead from the front at Wanaka’s best rated backpackers. 

Our Hostel Manager will mentor and manage a small international team, to provide and oversee excellent delivery of service and ensure that the highest of standards are met in both front and back of house aspects of the business.

Your property
Adventure Wanaka is a brand new hostel, one that we were very proud to open in Summer 2024, after over a year of refurbishment works.

Adventure Wanaka (AW) is considered a smaller-sized hostel, and yet is slightly larger than our two Queenstown hostels. Our Hostel Manager will be responsible for up to 68 guests and 4 full-time staff members. We know from experience that this number of guests is perfect to generate the fun, friendly and familial atmosphere that our guests seek out.
AW is located right in the Wanaka township and on the edge of the CBD, so your guests are only a few minutes’ walk to everything that the town has to offer.

This is a live-out role, our Hostel Manager will not be required to live on-site.

As New Zealand’s best reviewed hostel group, we are all about that attention to detail. All members of our team follow well-developed procedures and systems, complete task checklists and ensure that each and every interaction that they have with our guests is about maximising their experience at our hostels.

Our Hostel Manager will lead from the front desk, overseeing the front and back end of our Reservation systems from the Reception. They’ll be providing new arrivals with a phenomental welcome and a knowledgable orientation to Wanaka, They’ll also be keeping a nurturing yet ascertive eye on their team. The HM will ensure that their staff are completing their own assigned checklists and that both Reception based and Housekeeping centric tasks are adhered to and completed, to the high standards that our guests expect.

Throughout it all you’ll be supported by a management team that know their stuff.
You’ll be led by business owner Brett, who has seen it all and been absolutely everywhere. Brett has spent several years refining his understanding of what makes a fantastic guest & hostel experience. His years of travel have culminated in our two amazing Queenstown Hostels that have both been rated and awarded amongst the top 10 in the world, by Hostelworld travellers, Adventure Hostels NZ is a rapidly growing company, with eyes on future expansion across New Zealand.

  • You’ll have excellent written communication skills

Role Requirements

  • 2+ years of working experience within an accommodation or fast paced hospitality operation
    OR
  • 1 or more years of working experience within a Team Management, Leadership or supervisory position at an accommodation operation
  • 1 or more years of work experience within a highly rated backpackers/ hostel operation

The nitty gritty

  • Hostel Manager will report to the Operations Manager and Managing Director based in Queenstown.
  • The Role is an on-site role, remote working is not possible. The Hostel Manager will be working from: Adventure Wanaka Hostel, 56 Brownston St, Wanaka, 9305
  • Provide oversight to 4 full-time team members. Being responsible for new recruitment and their training.
  • Oversee, mentor and manage your team, ensuring that all required tasks are completed each day and to a high standard.
  • Create weekly working rosters and report worked hours to Head Office for payroll.
  • Responsible for reconciling payments taken daily electronically or in cash, When required, to deposit larger quantities of cash at the bank.
  • Provide monthly stocktakes and be responsible for the purchase of consumables.
  • Identifying and solving maintenance problems, when able.
  • Leading Reception from the front desk, where you’ll need to provide a great customer experience for all of our guests.
  • Being attentive, social, and generally add positive enthusiasm to the overall atmosphere.
  • Processing guest check-ins, check-outs and the creation of new, extension and future bookings. You’ll also be responsible for collecting and inputting all Guest data required by Head Office, and as per our policies.
  • Providing a hostel tour to all new arrivals, showcasing our amenities, facilities and generally welcoming each new guest into the Adventure family.
  • Positively handling enquiries and any issues in person, by phone or email.
  • Accurate and honest recording of bookings and payments, taking and processing cash, credit and debit card payments and accurately logging these within our property management system (Ibex Seekom)
  • You will aim to generate additional revenue for the Hostel through addon sales, tours and activity sales.
  • As a key aspect of the role, the Hostel Manager will also need to oversee their team’s housekeeping standards through regular cleaning checks and to assist if/when required.
  • Housekeeping tasks include, but not limited to the following:– Changing of beds on check-out– Deep cleans of specific areas of the hostel– Daily kitchen & bathroom cleans– Vacuum and mopping of communal spaces– Washing of all linens using provided washing machines and dryers– Nightly kitchen closes between 10:00-11:00pm
  • Completing any additional tasks given to you by your line Manager. The additional tasks may include deep cleaning, administrative or maintenance related tasks. Adventure Hostels will never provide you with any tasks that you would be unable to complete either due to skill or physicality. Training will always be provided when needed.
  • Always try to maintain professional attitude when inside the Hostel, urging Guests to follow the rules and to not encourage any behaviours deemed to be unwanted within the hostel. This also means responding to illicit or unwanted behaviours with adequate or appropriate responses. Adventure Hostels do not condone or tolerate the use or storage of drugs on-site.
