Position: Team Leader

The Team leader is a lead-by-example position designed to give support, confidence, and a limited oversight to the Adventure Hostels Team Members. To support and report to the Operations Team in Queenstown.
The Team Leader will have a solid understanding of hostel operations and the day to day running of a hostel, or our business. The Team leader will always be aiming to elevate the guest experience or to highlight to the Management team areas of improvement. The Team Leader position is a stepping stone on the path towards the hostel management team, the Team Leader will showcase a strong work ethic, dynamic problem-solving skills and their clear and engaging communication between Team Members and Management.
The basics
A standard work week at our hostels is 35-38 hours, and split between a 5-day working week. Adventure Hostels try to operate with a fixed work schedule, which means that your working hours rarely change from a week-to-week basis. Furthermore, we’ll always try to allocate two days off together as your weekend. This fixed rota system is great for our Team, and gives them the ability to easily plan and coordinate their adventures, hobbies and road trips outside of their working time.
A typical work week would look a little like this: (this is an example only and may not be your actual working days)
T – 11:00 – 19:30 + Evening event + 10pm kitchen close (1hr)
W – 08:30 – 15:00
T – 11:00 – 16:00
F – 11:00 – 19:30 + 10pm kitchen close (1hr)
S – 08:30 – 15:00
Your home
Adventure Hostels are smaller to medium sized hostels, with between 50-140, which is perfect to generate the fun, friendly and familial atmosphere that our guests adore. All of our hostels can be found in top notch locations, right in the heart of town – so you’re only a few minutes’ walk to everything that the destination has to offer. All of our team members and leaders live-in house at our hostels, in fantastic sized ensuited staff accommodation that vastly exceeds the industry standard, when it comes to staff digs.

Our team members will closely follow well-developed procedures and systems, complete task checklists and will ensure that each and every interaction you have with our guests is about maximising their experience at our hostels.
It’s effortlessly easy to make new friends or travel partners at Adventure Hostels. As part of your responsibilities, you’ll find yourself setting up and running pub quizzes from our dining room or setting up locations and prizes for our weekly scavenger hunt across the town – all as part of our nightly house-run activities.
Our team members are rostered on a rotating weekly basis and no single day at our hostels is ever the same. Our team members are responsible for it all, as you effortlessly move between Reception, Housekeeping and Events-focused tasks.
On Monday, you’ll be getting stuck-in on our housekeeping team. Tuesday, you’ll be hands on responding to guest enquiries & emails, handling check-ins and selling tours from our Front desk. Thursday night, you’re there front and centre, gearing our guests up for the weekly Mario Kart tournament in the lounge.

You’ll also hold the right to work within New Zealand and will likely have previous working experience within hostels, hotels or hospo. Lastly, you’re willing to commit to a full season with us – between 4-6 months.

The nitty gritty
This role is a lead by example position, for the benefit of our junior Team Members. You’ll provide the highest standards of customer service and support to all guests when on or off-shift. Additionally:
- To provide training, coaching and support to junior staff and new starters in place of Management when required. The Operations Team will provide an induction to new employees and from there the Team Leader will be responsible for training and supporting new employees in all SOPs, policies, and daily tasks.
- To learn and develop their own knowledge of Adventure Hostels and understand the company’s unique selling points, it’s aims and its goals, and to aid the company in achieving its short- and long-term goals.
- Monitor and report any maintenance issues that arise to the OM, resolving any light maintenance tasks where able. These light tasks may include servicing doors closers, refitting bed locker doors and other uncommon maintenance related issues.
- Complete a monthly stock take list for consumables, these will be ordered by the OM. You will also inform the OM of any other items that infrequently need ordering, such as stationary, maintenance replacement items or hostel equipment
- Responsible for inputting and resolving any unassigned or erroneous bookings when received from various sales channels.
- Reporting any discovered illicit activities or behaviours of Guests or Staff to Management immediately.
- To provide Management with verbal reports and feedback of the performance of Team Members
- Ensuring that all Team Members are present and report for shifts on time and are adequately presented.
- Ensuring that Team Members are efficiently completing duties as per the Jolt checklists, reporting any issues to Management.
- To act in a Managerial capacity on Saturdays, when rostered, providing the Queenstown teams with direction if required, and problem solve any guest or facilities issues that may arise on-shift.
Standard day-to-day tasks - Processing guest check-ins, check-outs, and the creation of new, extension and future bookings. You’ll also be responsible for collecting and inputting all Guest data required by Management, and as per our policies.
- Providing a hostel tour to all new arrivals, showcasing our amenities, facilities and generally welcoming each new guest into the Adventure family.
- Positively handling enquiries and any issues in person, by phone or email
- Accurate and honest recording of bookings and payments, taking and processing cash, credit and debit card payments and accurately logging these within our property management system (Ibex Seekom)
- To attempt to generate additional revenue for the Hostel through addon sales, tours and activity sales.
- Performing of housekeeping duties, as per Team Members existing responsibilities
- When rostered, responsible for setting-up, promoting and running the nightly hostel event to ensure that it operates to a decent standard and that guests are behaving in an appropriately responsible manner.
- Responsible for providing constructive feedback to Team Members, when instructed to by OM.
- Ensure that each morning, all reservations at their assigned property are paid up to date in accordance with the property’s booking policies.
- Completing any additional tasks given to you by the OM. The additional tasks may include deep cleaning, administrative or maintenance related tasks.
